Our OptiFlow™ feature allows for a user to breathe at any LPM (liters per minute) as the system will introduce room air to cover the demand during sprints. This lowers the purity by a variable percentage based on demand. The system will never drop below 40% purity during this time as traditional EWOT only requires 40% purity. Simply set the timer to operate at 5 minute increments and VO2 Pro shuts off automatically.

Why 50% Oxygen? It’s the Sweet Spot for Utilization
During exercise, the body’s ability to use oxygen is driven more by circulatory efficiency, mitochondrial capacity, and capillary perfusion, rather than simply increasing the oxygen percentage in the air you breathe.
Multiple studies have demonstrated that:
- Hemoglobin saturation approaches 98–100% at oxygen concentrations as low as 30–40%.
- Once hemoglobin is fully saturated, any additional oxygen (above ~40–50%) dissolves in plasma and provides limited additional benefit to cellular uptake.
- The body is not oxygen-limited above this point — it’s delivery- and utilization-limited.
In other words, increasing FiO₂ beyond 50% may sound more powerful, but oxygen uptake plateaus and performance returns diminish beyond that threshold.
Scientific Backing:
Wagner et al. (2006) and Richard Bloomer (2009) confirmed that oxygen delivery and VO₂ max do not significantly increase when FiO₂ rises above 50% during exercise.
The body simply can’t absorb or use much more oxygen once these physiological limits are reached — making 50% the most efficient and optimized range for EWOT.
Is Higher Oxygen Dangerous? Not Necessarily — But Not Always Needed
Our decision to cap the VO2 Pro at 50% purity is not a commentary on safety. Higher oxygen levels, such as 90% FiO₂, have valid applications in clinical or specialized recovery settings. We continue to support and offer systems that deliver higher purity oxygen for users with those specific goals.
However, for active EWOT sessions, where the body is moving, sweating, and circulating blood rapidly, oxygen utilization maxes out well before 90% purity is reached. As such, delivering oxygen at levels beyond 50% doesn’t translate to improved performance or better outcomes — it simply exceeds what the body can use during exercise.
